What Erie Parents Wish They Knew Before Their Child Got Braces

From first consultations to costs, here’s what Erie families should know before getting started.

August 11, 2026

Most parents don’t spend much time thinking about orthodontics until their dentist mentions it or they notice their child’s teeth starting to look a little crowded.

Then the questions come quickly. Did we wait too long? Does this mean braces? How much is this going to cost? And how is my child going to feel about all of it?

Most parents don’t realize how much has changed since they had braces themselves. That’s why we asked Drs. Murray and Iszkula of Murray & Iszkula Orthodontics what surprises Erie families most once they begin the process.

Here’s what parents often wish they had known before that first appointment.

The First Appointment Doesn’t Automatically Mean Braces

This is probably the biggest relief for parents: Scheduling an orthodontic consultation does not mean you’re committing your child to treatment.

The first visit is really about getting answers. Drs. Murray and Iszkula look at how your child’s teeth and jaw are developing, talk through anything they’re watching, and help you understand whether treatment is needed now, later, or possibly not at all.

For some children, the recommendation may simply be to keep an eye on things as they grow. For others, the doctors may see a reason why starting sooner would be helpful.

Not sure when that first visit should happen? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.

Sometimes Waiting Is the Right Choice. Sometimes It Isn’t.

Parents hear a lot of conflicting advice about when children should start orthodontic treatment. One person says to wait until all the baby teeth are gone. Someone else says their child started much earlier.

The truth is that there isn’t one perfect age for every child.

Some orthodontic issues are best addressed while a child is still growing. Others can be watched safely until more permanent teeth come in. That’s why an evaluation can be so helpful, even when your child is nowhere near ready for braces.

You don’t have to guess whether waiting is the right decision. An orthodontist can tell you what they’re seeing and when it would make sense to check again.

Braces May Be Different Than Parents Remember

If you had braces as a kid, chances are you have a few memories you’d rather not revisit.

Maybe you remember bulky brackets, uncomfortable adjustments, or feeling like you couldn’t eat anything you liked. It’s understandable to assume your child will have the same experience.

But orthodontic treatment has changed. Murray & Iszkula offers traditional braces, clear braces, and clear aligners, depending on what will work best for the patient.

The doctors walk families through each option and explain why they’re recommending it. The right choice usually comes down to your child’s bite, daily habits, and what will actually work best — not simply which option is newest or least noticeable.

Kids Often Adjust Faster Than Their Parents Expect

Parents naturally worry about how braces will affect school, sports, pictures, meals, and everything else that already feels complicated during the tween and teen years.

There may be an adjustment period, especially during the first few days, but braces usually become part of the normal routine fairly quickly. Kids still play sports, participate in music, spend time with friends, and smile for photos.

Murray & Iszkula also has a patient rewards program that lets kids earn points throughout treatment and redeem them for gift cards to places like Amazon, Target, and Starbucks.

Will a gift card make your child suddenly love every orthodontic appointment? Maybe not. But a little extra motivation certainly doesn’t hurt.

The Cost May Be More Manageable Than You Think

For a lot of families, the cost of braces is the part they’re most nervous to ask about.

Parents sometimes put off a consultation because they assume orthodontic treatment will be completely out of reach. But many dental insurance plans include some orthodontic coverage, and Murray & Iszkula offers flexible, interest-free payment plans — something my family has used!

A free consultation gives families a chance to understand what treatment is being recommended and what the financial options look like before making any decisions.

You’re not agreeing to anything simply by walking through the door. You’re gathering the information you need to decide what works for your family.

You Don’t Need to Have Everything Figured Out First

You don’t need to know whether your child needs braces. You don’t need to understand the difference between every treatment option. And you don’t need to wait until your child’s teeth look obviously crooked.

That’s what the consultation is for.

Drs. Murray and Iszkula can look at what’s happening now, explain what may happen as your child grows, and answer the questions you didn’t even know you were supposed to ask.

After the consultation, you’ll know which path makes the most sense. Some families leave ready to begin treatment, while others simply schedule another check-in down the road.

Parents often expect that first appointment to feel like a major decision. In reality, it can simply be a conversation that gives you a plan and a little peace of mind.

Questions Erie Parents Ask About Orthodontic Treatment

Does my child need a referral from a dentist?

You can contact Murray & Iszkula Orthodontics directly to schedule a free consultation. The office can also communicate with your child’s dentist as needed. We took advantage of the free consultation for both of our kids and came out of those appointments with a much clearer idea of what treatment our kids needed and when.

Will braces hurt?

Some temporary soreness is normal when braces are first placed or after certain appointments. Soft foods can help during those first few days, and the Murray & Iszkula team can offer guidance on keeping your child comfortable. For my kids, adjustments were a good excuse to ask for an ice cream treat!

Can my child still play sports with braces?

Absolutely. Most kids continue playing sports throughout orthodontic treatment. If your child plays football, hockey, basketball, or another contact sport, Murray & Iszkula may recommend a properly fitted orthodontic mouthguard to help protect both their teeth and braces.

Are clear aligners an option for children and teens?

For some patients, they can be. Whether clear aligners are a good fit depends on your child’s age, development, orthodontic needs, and ability to wear them as directed. Drs. Murray and Iszkula can explain whether braces, clear aligners, or another option would be most effective.

How long will orthodontic treatment take?

Every smile is different, so treatment time depends on what’s being corrected. During your consultation, Drs. Murray and Iszkula can give you a personalized estimate based on your child’s teeth and treatment plan. My daughter was in braces for almost exactly two years. My son, in treatment now with Murray & Iszkula Orthodontics, may be a little longer.
