Maple Taste & Tour: Visit 11 Sugarhouses in Erie County March 16 & 17

Tour sugarhouses, go on a wagon ride, try maple syrup, and more!

Get ready for some sweet treats!

The Northwest Pennsylvania Maple Syrup Producers Association's 20th Annual Maple and Taste Tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, 2024. Your family can travel from sugarhouse to sugarhouse to see firsthand the various processes of making maple syrup, tapping trees, different storing techniques, and more.  

All tours are free! 

Most of these sugarhouses now take credit cards, but some do not so take cash to play it safe!

From the owners: We welcome you to our Taste & Tour on Dublin Road outside of Waterford to see the time-honored tradition of making maple syrup! Come into the sugarhouse and learn how our evaporator boils sap to make pure maple syrup. Then see where our syrup is filtered and bottled. Learn about the color grades of syrup.  

Our cozy showroom, decorated with antique farm tools, is adjacent to the sugarhouse. Come on in and take time to enjoy our prizewinning pure maple syrup on FREE pancakes.

From the owners: Free Tour and free maple hot cocoa for everyone. Wagon ride or Interpretive Walking Trail to see how pure maple syrup is made in a sugarhouse, in kettles, and on a flat pan. Wear boots, dress warmly. 

MAPLE MUSEUM: Interpreted “Tree to Table” exhibits, many kids activities, hold the Newbery award medal for Miracles on Maple Hill, a book about making syrup in Northwest Pennsylvania.

From the Lanes: Small backyard sugar shack. First Generation syrup maker. Started over an open fire then to a burn barrel evaporator and now a 2 foot by 4 foot raised flew evaporator.  I have approximately 115 taps all buckets and bags from friends’ trees. Come and sample our syrup, we specialize in bourbon barrel aged syrup. Yum! 

Note: Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

From the Walbergs: We are a family operation that has been producing maple syrup since 1944. Presently we have 1,400 taps on tubing. Syrup is processed on a 3 ½ x 10 wood fired evaporator with a steamaway. 

Our syrup has won numerous awards over the years; the PA Farm Show, Best in Show twice, the NAMSC for light amber category. Won 2019 Best of Show at Waterford fair.

Free samples of Maple syrup, coated nuts, candy, cream, mustard, crumb, and maple cotton candy will be available and also for purchase. Join us for lunch where you can purchase a Smith hot dog and enjoy a free hot beverage. Take a chance on our free maple basket.

From the Bileks:  Triple Creek Maple is a family run business that has been producing all-natural maple syrup since 1988. Our farm operation focuses on healthy, sustainable practices that insure long term maple syrup production without harm to the forest. Over the past 35 plus years we have grown from a 10 to a 2,100 tap operation using a tubing/vacuum system, reverse osmosis, and a wood pellet fired evaporator. Currently we are researching and developing a new method of sap filtration in the evaporator and refrigerating concentrated sap. Triple Creek produces a high quality extra thick maple syrup.

Come visit and see how we make maple syrup. We would love to meet you. Free samples of maple products and maple baked goods will be available. Free horse drawn wagon rides on Saturday.

Information about the sugarhouse and tour: The Northwestern High School Sugar House is run by the Albion FFA Chapter. A student-focused business from tree to bottle, where they learn the entire process of maple production. Some of the syrup is then used to make value-added products in our school’s food science lab.Some of our products are Maple Mustard, BBQ Sauce, Candy, Cream, Cotton Candy, and much more. 

We have plenty of paved walkways and parking and a large, heated pavilion attached to our sugarhouse. In addition, there will be local craft and artisan vendors as well as our maple goodies. Stop in and support our student-run program.
