Hey Erie! Catch This: Sunday is a Fish-For-Free Day in PA

Find out when you can fish without a license in PA and NY

By Kara Murphy May 21, 2024

Pennsylvania's fish for free days allow residents and non-residents to legally fish on Pennsylvania waterways, including Lake Erie, with no fishing license required.

Pennsylvania's fish for free days in 2024 are:

  • Sunday, May 26
  • July 4

Don't have a pole? Don't worry! If you have a library card, you can "check out" fishing poles and tackle boxes at Erie's Blasco Library, 160 E. Front St.

Fish for free in New York too!

New York also has fish-for-free days open to both residents and non-residents.

New York's upcoming fish-for-free dates in 2024 are:

  • June 29 to 30
  • September 28
  • November 11

Just like in Pennsylvania, no fishing license is required on those dates. (New York's free fishing is limited to freshwater fishing.) Read more about New York's freshwater fishing regulations.

Ohio also has fish-for-free dates, but they are open to Ohio residents only.
