New Website Makes it Easy to Find Trails In Erie County

By Kara Murphy, publisher Macaroni Kid Erie July 25, 2018

Erie County residents know their favorite trails and hiking areas. Are you and your kids Asbury Woods fans? Or does your family end up most often at Wintergreen Gorge?

Or maybe you like to stay urban, with a hike in McClelland Park?

Now there's a new website which gives users a view of Erie County trails in one location, making it easy for you and the kids to find a new Erie trail to explore. The website, www.erietrails.org, currently includes 15 trail locations. It is still growing as more municipalities submit trails to include.

"We are very fortunate to be living in a greater regional community with so many trails venues to celebrate," said Sarah Galloway, the sustainability coordinator for the city of Erie. "The Greater Erie Regional Trails Network makes it so easy for folks to go on the website, find a new cool place to explore, know how long the trails are, and the type of terrain. It also makes it super easy to plan a fun a safe adventure for families and individuals of all ages and abilities."

The website, spearheaded by the Erie Area Council of Governments, is designed to make it easier for visitors and residents to find recreational trails throughout the county. Whether you like to hike in the woods, walk in a city park, or take a stroll on the waterfront, Erie County has a vast array of park and recreational opportunities to explore.

Users will find trail locations, see maps of the trail routes, see trail lengths, view photos of the venues and terrain and learn about upcoming activities and events.

Along with the website, the initiative includes 26 trail signs on 11 trail locations.

Macaroni Kid Erie is in the process of crowd-sourcing a guide on the dozens of Erie County's parks and playgrounds. The guide is designed for use by parents, grandparents and other caregivers. The guide will include answers to questions families want to know such as:

  • What equipment does the playground have?
  • Is there a fence?
  • Is there a water feature?
  • Seriously. What is the bathroom situation?

You can add to the guide by filling out this questionnaire anytime you visit an Erie County playground:
