'Pay What You Wish' at the Hagen History Center through March 2025

One of Erie's top museums is going with a 'pay what you wish' model through March

By Macaroni KID Erie January 6, 2025

Looking for a family outing that’s fun and easy on the wallet this winter? The Hagen History Center is making history of its own with an amazing opportunity for Erie County residents: For the first time ever, the museum is offering “Pay What You Wish” admission.

Yep, you read that right. From now through the end of March, Erie County residents can explore all the museum’s incredible exhibits for whatever you can afford.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What’s 'Pay What You Wish'?

It’s exactly what it sounds like! Erie County residents can pay whatever fits their budget to visit the Hagen History Center. Whether it’s $1, $10, or nothing at all, you and your family can dive into Erie’s history without breaking the bank.

IMPORTANT! Proof of residency is required (so grab that driver’s license or mail it to your Erie County address before you go).

Why This Is So Cool

The Hagen History Center is the first museum in the region to launch a program like this. Thanks to the generosity of HBKS Wealth, this initiative runs through March 31 and makes local history accessible to all Erie County residents (note that non-Erie County residents will still pay normal admission fees!)

Museums across the country have seen huge increases in visitors when offering similar programs. If Erie shows up, this could become an annual tradition!

What’s New at the Museum?

There’s so much to see, including:

  • Made You Look: Historic Erie signs packed with nostalgia.
  • 100 Years of the Erie Zoo: A roaring good time with memories of this community gem.
  • Triggering History: Learn about the legacy of Erie firearms (just opened this month!)

Still want more? The museum’s packed with favorites like:

  • The Watson-Curtze Mansion’s history.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright’s San Francisco office.
  • Erie’s naval and military history.
  • Women’s bowling history (a strike with kids and adults alike!).

They’ve added 10 new exhibits since March, so even if you’ve been before, there’s plenty to discover.

Why You Should Go

Winter days in Erie can feel long, but the Hagen History Center is the perfect way to get out of the house without spending a ton. Whether you’re introducing your little ones to Erie’s history or just need a screen-free day with the fam, this program makes it super easy.

So bundle up, grab the kids, and make a day of it. Who knows—you might even spot an Insta-worthy moment in the Watson-Curtze Mansion. 😉
