The Erie Yacht Club's Reyburn Sailing School has been teaching the art of sailing for 75 years, providing a safe and engaging environment for children and adults to develop their skills on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie. The Learn to Sail Program is open to the community for ages 6-17. There is also an adult learn-to-sail class! 

All of the Erie Yacht Club classes follow US Sailing educational guidelines, and all of their vessels are proven to be exceptionally safe and easy to sail and operate, making their classes suitable for both novice and accomplished boaters.

  • Fleet includes: Club 420, Optimist, J/22, Laser, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks
  • Skill levels: Beginner to advanced racing sailors

⛵ Summer Sailing Programs

Opti Night Class (Ages 6-8)

This 8-week evening class introduces young sailors to water safety, boat controls, and basic sailing maneuvers in a fun and encouraging setting.

Opti Day Class (Ages 8-12)

This 8-week daytime class allows younger sailors to independently sail Optimist dinghies while learning seamanship, boat handling, and sailing fundamentals.

Beginner 420 Day Class (Ages 10-18)

This 8-week class teaches the fundamentals of sailing aboard Club 420s, focusing on teamwork, boat handling, safety, and beginner racing techniques.

Optimist Race Team (Ages 10-14)

This 8-week racing program helps sailors refine boat handling and racing skills, with opportunities to compete in local and regional regattas.

Adventure J22 Day Class (Ages 13-18)

This 8-week class introduces sailors to keelboats using our fleet of J/22s. Students will build upon skills learned in the Beginner 420 class while developing teamwork, boat handling, navigation, and safety procedures.

420/Laser Race Team (Ages 13-18)

This 9-week advanced racing program is designed for competitive sailors, featuring team practices, weekend regattas, and advanced racing tactics.

J-22 Adult Class

This 8-week course offers adults the opportunity to learn to sail on J/22s through a mix of on-the-water training and dockside instruction in a fun, social setting. The curriculum covers sailing theory, terminology, rigging and de-rigging, personal safety, knots, right-of-way rules, man overboard procedures, and teamwork.
