Animal Habitats
Erie Zoo

The Erie Zoo is the perfect place to spend the day or just a few hours. A comfortable walk throughout the Erie Zoo and Botanical Garden takes an hour or two, depending on how quick your kids are! You'll see nearly 400 animals as well as the beautiful gardens throughout the park. There is also a carousel and train. eriezoo.org
Asbury Woods Nature Center
Inside the Nature Center, visitors can enjoy live animal habitats, a turtle pond, and a live honeybee hive exhibit. Free. asburywoods.org
Adoptable Animals
30 W. 8th St.
Visit with cats up for adoption at this beautiful new downtown cafe. Children under 10 not permitted. Visits start at $10 per 30 minutes. purristacatcafe.com
1555 East 10th Street
Visits are welcome to say hello and pet cats. Dogs are also on-site to visit. Volunteers also welcome to foster animals at their own homes, or care for animals on-site. theannashelter.com

Thirty dog kennels and 32 cat rooms are open for public viewing. Volunteers are also welcome to foster or care for animals on-site. Volunteers ages 6-18 must be accompanied by an adult. Also holds free "Sit, Stay, Read" events for ages 2-5 the first Saturday of each month. eriehumanesociety.org

Along with seeing buffalo, there are also donkeys, goats, chickens, and ducks that you can feed. It costs $1 for an ice cream cone full of food to feed the animals.

Trail rides available. Kids must be 6 and up. Double DAB also has a petting farm that includes donkeys, miniature horses, llamas, goats, calves and pot-bellied pigs among other animals.

Worth the Drive From Erie
If you're up for a little road trip, here are additional spots worth the drive from Erie to see animals. All of these are within about a one- to two-hour drive of Erie:
Pennsylvania
New Castle
Walk-thru and drive-thru safaris are available. You can hand-feed many of the animals.
Feed giraffes, bottle feed animals, and take horse, pony, and camel rides. Visit a walk-thru aviary, help feed an alligator, and visit the pirate ship playground. (Closed for season)
Linesville
Watch ducks walk on the back of fish. Take bread. Free.
Jamestown, Pa.
Dozens of exotic and domestic animal species in this family-owned park. A favorite is the “Kiddie Zoo” where kids get up close to baby animals and a variety of domestic farm animals and deer. (Closed Oct.-April)
Pittsburgh
The nation's premier bird zoo.
You'll find more than 475 species represented by 4,000 animals at this combo zoo and aquarium.

Ohio
A family-oriented center devoted to agriculture and farming. Kids can milk cows, take a horsedrawn carriage ride and meet farm animals.
From moon jellyfish to a Giant Pacific Octopus, you’ll discover more than 1,400 animals representing 250 species.
The 183-acre zoo is divided into several areas: Australian Adventure; African Savanna; Wilderness Trek; The Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building; The RainForest; and Waterfowl Lake.
