Maple Taste & Tour: Visit 14 Sugarhouses in Erie County & Beyond

The 18th annual Maple Taste and Tour is March 13 and 14

Get ready for some sweet treats!

The Northwest Pennsylvania Maple Syrup Producers Association's 18th Annual Maple and Taste Tour takes place Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14. Your family can travel from sugarhouse to sugarhouse to see first hand the various processes of making maple syrup, tapping trees, different storing techniques and more.  

All tours are free and run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 

Here is the list of participating sugarhouses in Erie County, Crawford County, and Chautauqua County, N.Y. Thank you to the Northwest Pennsylvania Maple Association for the information.

From the Walbergs: We are a family operation that has been producing maple syrup since 1944.  Presently we have 1,300 taps on tubing and 100 on buckets. Syrup is processed on a 3 ½ x 10 wood fired evaporator with a steamaway.

Our syrup has won numerous awards over the years; the PA Farm Show, Best in Show twice, the NAMSC for light amber category. Won 2019 Best of Show at Waterford fair.

Free samples of Maple syrup, coated nuts, candy, cream, mustard, and crumb will be available and also for purchase. Join us for lunch where you can purchase a Smith hot dog and enjoy a free hot beverage. Take a chance on our free maple basket. Credit cards accepted.

From the Shumakes: Come enjoy the delicious smell of sap boiling in our cozy Family operated sugarhouse. We collect 400 taps and boil it on our grandfathers restored 3 x 8 wood-fired evaporator. We are a small operation, but love the time spent with family, friends, and neighbors. There will be delicious syrup samples, our famous Rum-Barrel aged maple syrup for sale, infused syrups, and various other tempting treats to try. 

Curb-side ordering and pick up will be available this year for your convenience if you do not feel comfortable coming into the sugarhouse. We accept cash, credit card, and checks.

From the Bileks: Triple Creek Maple is a family business that has been producing maple syrup since 1988. Over the past 30 plus years we have grown from a 10 to a 2000 tap operation using a tubing/vacuum system, reverse osmosis, and a wood pellet fired evaporator. Currently, we are researching and developing a new method of sap filtration in the evaporator. Triple Creek produces maple syrup and a variety of other maple products. Free Samples of maple products and maple baked goods will be available. Free Horse Drawn Wagon Rides on Saturday. 

Triple Creek Maple will offer a variety of customer options for this year's maple taste and tour event. Due to the issues created by the COVID-19 virus we will provide several safe options for visitors to choose from, including curbside pickup, in-store shopping with masks, or ordering online.

From the Howles: Our operation includes 100 acres of tapped woods with 6500 taps offsite, 100 miles of pipeline to produce around 3, 000 gallons of maple syrup. We use a wood fired evaporator and a reverse osmosis machine to reduce the sap. While most of our syrup was previously shipped out of the country, we now use it at our restaurant and brewery (also on tour) the Riverside Brewing Company. 

We are excited to be on the tour in 2021. We will free tours of our sugarhouse, free samples of unique maple products, and have for purchase our maple products, concession food, and our own Riverside Brewing Company beer. Products include maple mustards, bbq sauces, cream, butters, candy, nuts, hot sauce, glaze, salad dressings, jelly, maple sugar, cotton candy, seasonings, a new surprise product and more! 

Please dress appropriate for the weather. Heaters outside will help cut the cold. This is a family friendly event and the first 25 guests under the age of 10 will receive a free coloring book! Warm food, cold beer, free samples, fun tour!d Spicy Bull BBQ, Black Dust, and Maple Peanut Butter!

From the Kents: How Sweet It Is, a small scale syrup making operation will be doing a drive-thru outside educational tour this year, for the safety of our family and yours. As you enter the circular drive, customers will be greeted and given an order sheet to fill out. Orders will be filled on-site and delivered to the customer’s car. We will have our Hot Apple Dumplings, Maple Lemonade, Sweet Tea, Sap Dogs, Maple Barbecue Sloppy Joes, Maple Milkshakes, Sundaes and all of the other maple products for sale.

From Riverside: The Riverside Brewing Company is a maple themed brewery and restaurant. Come see all the unique and creative ways our chef and brewer has incorporated into our menus. This is the brainchild of Jason and Deanna Howles; owners of Howles Maple Farm. As lifelong maple producer, we have taken maple syrup to another level and inspired everything from the decor to the gift shop and food and drink menus to include maple. 

Join us for a special maple brunch both days starting at 10 am until 1 pm. Products include maple mustards, bbq sauces, cream, butters, candy, nuts, hot sauce, glaze, salad dressings, jelly, maple sugar, cotton candy, seasonings, a new surprise product and more! This is a family friendly event and the first 25 guests under the age of 10 eat free (short stack of pancakes) Come learn how the tradition of making syrup turned into developing a maple themed restaurant and brewery.
